Since 1985, Genesis Women’s Shelter has been giving victims of abuse a safe way out of domestic violence. Genesis has never received government funding, instead relying on grants, corporations and individuals to help us in this endeavor. One easy and fun way to make a lasting impact in the lives of our women and children is through donations. If you would like to organize a donation drive with your church, work or book club, there are a few things to consider before getting started.

What condition are your items in?

Brand new – After safety, self-esteem and dignity are our next goals. A woman and her children need to know they are worthy and deserving of something new. These items should be delivered to the Outreach Office at 4411 Lemmon Ave. Suite 201, 75219. To schedule a drop-off, contact Lottie Price at 214.389.7775.

Gently-used – The Genesis Benefit Thrift Store accepts gently-used clothing (men, women and children), furniture and household items. Funds raised by the benefit store allow us to continue to offer our services at no cost to the clients. From that dress you haven’t worn in years, to the chair that doesn’t match your new décor, there is no limit to how much you can bring or how we can use it to benefit the women and children of Genesis. We even provide drive-through services so you never have to leave your car, unless you want to come in and shop!

With vouchers, our clients are able to shop at no cost, from a pair of heels for a job interview to a gently-used coffee table for her new apartment. Store hours for donations are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Volunteers will unload your vehicle and give you a tax receipt.

What do you need right now in particular?

While we will gladly and gratefully accept thick, warm jackets in July, think about the season and what you and your family currently are wearing. If it is summer and your children are wearing shorts and tee shirts and shopping for back to school, chances are our residents and clients need the same things.

What do you need in your day-to-day life?

Paper towels, laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner aren’t glamorous donations, but they are absolutely necessary. Without these day-to-day items, the women and children in our emergency shelter and transitional housing would not be able to live comfortably.

And now, you’re ready! Visit our Giving Items page for an up-to-date, full list of current needs. Then, get together with your friends, coworkers, church, book club and start collecting! If you have any questions or want more information on in-kind donations, please contact Lottie Price at lprice@genesisshelter.org or call 214.389.7775.
