Counseling
At Genesis, we know that women and children who have experienced domestic abuse benefit greatly from counseling support as they heal. Genesis opened our Non-Residential Counseling Office to provide individualized and group therapy for those who have experienced abuse but do not currently need shelter. Our Counselors see more than 1,000 women and children each year, totaling more than 17,000 counseling hours.
We provide counseling services for both English and Spanish speakers. Our services are free and available to women of all ages as well as children and teens, including boys up to age 17.

Individualized & Group Therapy
Individualized counseling helps women and children heal from the impact of trauma that can linger long after the abuse has ended. In addition, group counseling sessions and weekly group meetings give clients a chance to share their stories with others who share similar experiences so they can understand that they are not alone.
Our Approach
At Genesis, we focus on utilizing evidence-based treatments to better serve those in need. We operate from a trauma-informed approach to understand the impact it has on our brain. Many women who see us are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We work to identify where they are on their journey, and to determine the best course of action. Our counselors are all trained in various best practices for trauma for survivors.
Understanding PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is the most common diagnosis we see among our clients. Women who have gone through domestic violence have often lived in a war-zone at home, with responses similar to those who have experienced war. We know that PTSD is a completely normal response to an abnormal situation. It is also difficult to recover from PTSD without professional help. Our goal is to determine how her unique situation has affected her so we can help her on her journey.
Our counselors are always available to answer any questions regarding PTSD symptoms, treatments, or other services we offer at Genesis.
The mostly highly recommended form of therapy for children, Trauma Focused –Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT, is most effective on those aged 3 to 17, and puts an emphasis on the importance of the mother/child relationship. The bond between mother and child suffering from abuse can be damaged during this season of their lives. This form of therapy reconnects mothers with their children, through story-telling. TF-CBT is proven to increase positive parenting skills and attachment between family members.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a type of therapeutic intervention that connects what people know to be true with how they feel. EMDR focuses on the body and how it reacts to certain triggers. EMDR effectively works on women and children to connect the heart and the brain to alleviate PTSD symptoms, decrease triggers, increase self esteem, and give survivors a better understanding of their situation.

Our counselors have all been trained in various forms of therapy, and lead classes for our clients. These classes include Domestic Violence Education classes for Child Protective Services (CPS) clients, Parenting Classes for women, and classes for those who have been court-ordered to come to Genesis, often at High Risk Offenders court. We also offer a Friends and Family Group for those who have a loved one experiencing domestic violence.
