International Women’s Day is Thursday, March 8, 2018 – a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Thanks to the Suffragettes’ tireless efforts toward gender equality, International Women’s Day was established in 1911. After more than 100 years, a single mindset remains the same: recognizing, honoring and celebrating the accomplishments of women globally.

World-renowned feminism activist Gloria Steinem states that the “story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.” At Genesis, we recognize that our community must work together to empower women on all scales, whether it’s through widespread awareness like the #MeToo or #TIMESUP movements, or in casual conversation in our homes and workplaces.

Genesis Women’s Shelter is proud to support and advocate for women from all places, situations, and backgrounds, as we know that domestic violence can affect any woman from any walk of life. There are no racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational or age-related boundaries when it comes to abuse, and in order to put an end to domestic violence, we need to understand that it affects all of us and that we’re all in this together.

As a positive force for women in the community, Genesis is dedicated to educating and initiating community conversations about domestic violence awareness. If you’d like to join us in our fight to end abuse against women and children, there are several ways to get involved:

Be Her First Step

The first step in stopping domestic violence is learning about it. Only then can you be a helping hand in addressing the many forms it takes, whether its physical, verbal, financial or emotional. Educate yourself today and be her first step.

Volunteer at Genesis

Whether you choose to join us on a weekly basis or just a few times, there are multiple volunteer opportunities for you at Genesis. When you volunteer, you give back to your community in more ways than you could imagine. Check out our volunteer opportunities to see which option best matches your passion, skills and interests.

Create a safe corporate culture at your work

We know that it takes a community coming together to end domestic violence. Providing a culture of understanding can lead to increased employee morale, and we also know that safety comes before productivity. Check out our blog to read about a few simple steps your business can take to become a safe harbor for those experiencing domestic abuse.

Plug into a group that shares your passion

Genesis has six different auxiliary groups so you can join forces with others committed to the Genesis mission. Whether you’re interested in the faith community or how men can be involved as a part of the solution, we have a place for you.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect and celebrate where women are, where we have been, and where we will go. Thank you for walking alongside us to help women find the abuse-free lives they deserve!
