Next Friday, August 17, is National Nonprofit Day, and there’s still time to get involved!

At Genesis, we love and appreciate our volunteers every day. Especially on National Nonprofit Day, we celebrate the impact of volunteer service and the power of change-makers to come together to tackle domestic violence. Genesis is so grateful for our amazing volunteers who give so generously of their time and talents. Last year, our volunteers gave more than 4,500 hours of their time to help women and children in our community. Thank you! We couldn’t do it without you.

It’s easy to find a cause to be passionate about in a city so full of philanthropic people. The DFW Metroplex is full of opportunities to get involved and give back to your community.

Find your passion.

Think about what you loved doing as a child or what you would do with a completely free Saturday. Whether you want to cuddle puppies at the animal shelter or volunteer to help sort food at a food bank, there’s a place for you. Think about your values and what’s important to you in a thriving community. If all else fails, roll the dice and pick something – sometimes, the best way to find your passion is by trying new things!

Research the opportunities.

Most nonprofits have a wealth of information on their website in addition to a dedicated staff member to coordinate with volunteers. Get in touch and discuss potential volunteer activities. Think about if you want to volunteer by yourself, with a friend or with a group. Do you want to volunteer this week, commit to a cause once a month or get involved throughout the year?

Plug in!

Once you’ve chosen a nonprofit to volunteer with, give it all you’ve got! Volunteer work takes passion and drive. Make sure you understand the expectations and can follow through. Most nonprofits rely on volunteers to provide critical services, so it’s important to be dependable. And always remember what a difference you’re making in the lives of your community members!

If you’re looking for a way to get involved with Genesis, we’d love to have you. At Genesis, we focus on helping women and children create the abuse-free lives they deserve. You can give back by playing with the kiddos in our children’s department, sorting donations at the Benefit Thrift Store, or serving pancakes to our families on a Saturday morning. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities by visiting our website or by contacting Volunteer Manager Chandra Adkins at 214.389.7701 or cadkins@genesisshelter.org.
