Genesis On-Site School
A Safe Place to Learn and Grow
The Simmons School at Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support is an On-Site Alternative School available to our shelter clients. The Simmons School is a full-service, K-12 school with a full-time, certified teacher and aide and follows Texas curriculum in order to progress our students through their current grade-level and prepare them for a smooth transition back into the mainstream school population once their Shelter stay has concluded. Opened September of 2008, The Simmons School is a critical component in the Genesis continuum of care and provides normalcy, stability, a sense of safety and a sense of peace for our youngest clients while assuring that all their educational needs are met.
The goals of the On-Site Alternative School are to ensure each child is safe, each child is given an individualized education and each child has full access to the services of qualified Play Therapists and Counselors who understand their unique needs. The average number of school-aged children at the Shelter varies between 8 and 10 children per day. Our School provides small classroom sizes and one-on-one teaching which has produced incredible results.
We are grateful for the extensive community support we have received which allows us to make our school up-to-date from a technology perspective. The use of technology in mainstream classrooms is tremendously important; in our classroom, students enjoy a smart board, educational computer games and activities, as well as curriculum and computer-based homework assignments. Access to classroom computers provides students with a safe place to learn and grow and at the same time, hone their computer skills to make them competitive with other school children their age.
